Forestry Industry

The forestry industry in South Africa is a major contributor to the national economy. Commercial plantations cover an area of about 1, 2 million hectares. The industry produces approximately 18.5 million m3 (cubic meters) of commercial roundwood worth about R10,1 billion and a gross contribution to GDP of R36, 7 billion. Commercial plantation are mainly concentrated in Mpumalanga (494 004 ha), KwaZulu Natal (484 296 ha), Limpopo (49 126 ha), Eastern Cape (141 812 ha) and Western Cape (43 146 ha).
